Rising Star Schools
Rising Star schools are identified by the Nevada Department of Education and meet the following criteria:
  • Based upon the most recent annual report of the statewide system of accountability for public schools, the public school is an elementary school or middle school that was rated in the lowest 5 percent of elementary or middle schools in the State in pupil achievement and school performance for the most recent school year.
  • Or, the public school is a high school that had a graduation rate for the immediately preceding school year of less than 60 percent.

Shining Star Schools
Shining Star Schools have significantly outperformed the State average in serving ALL kids, with an emphasis on closing the opportunity gap. A shining star school is a high-performing school serving a high percentage of students who quality for Free or Reduced Lunch (FRL) (at least 75% of students eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch, 50% for high schools) (source: NV Department of Education).

College Readiness
The number of 11th grade students who are ready to go to college without having to take remedial classes that do not count towards college credit. An ACT score of 22 is a baseline for college readiness without a student needing to repeat high school work once they get to college.
